Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better known under her stage name Queen Latifah. Her work as Queen Latifah in film, television and music has won her several awards. These include the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah, the daughter of the Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was born and raised within Newark New Jersey. Latifah's parents separated when she was 10 years old. Latifah was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah was her stage name at the time she reached the age of eight. The word means extremely delicate in Arabic. Latifah was who was 5'10" tall power forward for the high school team, was always a tall girl. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in the course of a show in her high school. Latifah first began to beatbox for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah was one of the members of the original version of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the tune. He signed Latifah and dropped her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
